KOZHIKODE: IUML Chief MK Muneer, MLA, has sought to register a complaint against PA Public Works Minister Mohamed Riyas and officials in relation to the bridge collapse at Mavoor on Monday. “Three girders of the bridge connecting Kozhikode and Malappuram districts collapsed at Koolimadu in Mavoor. The fixing of the beams should have been done with care.

The accident occurred when the work was entrusted to inexperienced workers. There were not enough officials or technical assistance during the construction of the bridge. If former public works minister Ibrahim Kunju could be charged in the Palarivattom overflight case, why couldn’t Riyas be charged in this incident if one follows the same logic? he asked during a protest march outside the PWD office here on Tuesday.

The protest was organized by the Muslim Youth League demanding action against those responsible for the incident. “The number of collapsing bridges is on the rise in the state. But no investigation is taking place into the incidents. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan supports widespread corruption,” Muneer said.

Referring to the flaws in the Palarivattom flyover, Muneer justified that the bridge was safe and that only concrete went down. “It was political revenge that led to the framing of Ibrahim Kunju in this case,” he said.

Meanwhile, MYL plans to approach the Vigilance Department in the Mavoor Bridge Collapse incident. MYL State Secretary General PK Firos demanded blacklisting of ULCCS, which is the contractor of Mavoor Bridge, and filing a complaint against the Minister of Public Works . “ULCCS has become a lucrative agency of CPM,” he said. The PWD Vigilance Wing will conduct an inspection at the bridge site on Wednesday.
